This is the cultural melting pot of the world! There's no such thing as speaking  "american!" When they invaded this country and took the land no one demanded that they learn native tongue! Our country is still so full of close minded people, it blows my mind.

Our official language is American haha. We speak everything :) I think our kids should be taught second and third languages starting in elementary. It will create better job opportunities also

As someone who comes from a country with 2 official languages I have to say it has both its ups and downs. It's great because the French speaking people don't feel excluded when they go out west. Most of the "English" speaking provinces will accommodate francophones. However if an anglophone goes to Quebec it's VERY difficult to get along without knowing French. It's very difficult to get a good job in Quebec if you aren't bilingual, and forget about a government job. It's impossible. There is also a double standard. English speaking people have to take French in school. No exceptions, however French speaking people don't have to learn English. It kind of sucks.

My mother is Panamanian so I grew up hearing Spanish spoken all around me even though I grew up in the States. In many of my schools we had a Spanish class that we went to weekly and in high school we were required to take two semesters of a foreign language. I chose Spanish (mostly because I knew it would be an easy "A" with my Hispanic background) but now I can put on job applications that I know a second language! In the healthcare facility I worked in it was a great help!

I do not think it is really nessisary.  I used to, until I saw an old newspaper printed in the 1920s.  There were numerous advertisements printed in German.  It was then that I finally understood, that immigration really is nothing new.  If history plays itself out like it has numerous times before.  1st generation immigrants speak next to no English.  2nd generation immigrants can speak both English and thier native tounge fluently. 3rd generation speak next to none of their native tounge.   It was the way it played out for the Germans.  It is the way it will play out for the Mexicans.  Why make it "official" why put up another hurtle toward citizenship?

When my baby is born, I will be teaching them 2 languages, maybe three because the United states has a universal language.
