Why does it hurt so bad?????

So me and my boyfriend been together for almost a year now and we both are virgins. A few week ago we tried to have sex we didn't plan it or anything it just happened but when he tired to put it in there it really really really hurt like it was super painful. So I told him to stop and he did. And then we tired again a few days later and it still really hurt. And I feel like I'm ready but it hurts to much. So we decided to wait until I'm really sure that I'm ready. But does it suppose to hurt that bad???? Is something wrong with me??? I know it's supposed to hurt but it really hurts. Are there tips to make it less painful??? I looked it up but it didn't really help. and btw we used protection.
