What to look for?

Question

What should I look for in a dog breeder? Like good things they should have before I consider buying a puppy? I'm looking to get a purebred, not sure what breed yet, but want to get the pup from a good breeder.

I wouldn't recommend going to a breeder. There are purebred rescues for almost ever type of dog, and purebred dogs also end up in shelters. Millions of dogs are euthanized each year due to overpopulation. Breeders contribute to that. They also over charge. Do your research. Dogs are more work than kids. Especially if you get a breed that doesn't fit your lifestyle.

Why does it have to be a purebred? My sister got a Golden Retriever from a breed. This dog had amazing credentials: her grandpa won prices for "the most beautiful dog" and she came with a "royal family tree". She is a dog with anxiety and my sister had to spend a fortune on training and stuff. She's now 9 years and has arthosis in her shoulder (which is common for Golden Retrievers). She is boring and slow. Always has been. Years after my sister got her dog I decided to adopt one from Greece. Her name is Lexi. She lived in a trash can in Greece amd was very sick. When I thought about adopting a dog, I decided to get the sickest one (because the healthy ones get adopted faster). 6 Years later: She is a beauty. People always stop and tell us how beautiful she is and if we could tell them her breed so that they can get a dog just like her. Her disease got better quickly and was gone after 6 months of tender love and care. She is a VERY quick learner. She likes to cuddle and she is a clown sometimes. She is the best! You see: It doesn't have to be a purebred. Just go look at some puppies and choose the most curious one that steals your hard (they have to be curious if you want an intelligent dog who learns fast).

I would recommend checking out rescues for specific breeds. there's a cavilier rescue that I keep track of that rescues purebred caviliers  from puppy mills. there's many other rescues that have purebreds. don't go to a breeder.

The biggest thing is making sure you don't go to a breeder who is over breeding. That is the biggest no no! And I highly suggest getting a Golden Retriever. Best ever. 😍

We have a litter of 13 puppies from these 2. Top is the momma (pit bull) and bottom is daddy (lab retriever.) We didn't want them to breed or even want her to have any puppies period but this is what happens when you let irresponsible family members dog sit 😡 but after further investigation we learned that the pups are "hybrids" and they are said to be very loyal, smart, curious, active and protective dogs. Its going to be a challenge getting them into good homes BC they are part pit bull ☹ just sharing this BC dogs that are not purebred sometimes have a tendency to be better for a lot of families. And they often get overlooked and euthanized BC people want purebred or "designer" dogs.

I highly suggest a rescue group or humane society and adopt. they do get purebred puppies in and they need a home desperately. But if you do buy from a breeder, make sure you get all the info you can possibly get on them and their dogs.

We bought both of out Mali's from a breeder. Malinois are used generally for police and K9 and the breeder was in the police. Also he had been breeding  and training his entire life and his father did the same before him. That amount of training and history is unbeatable in my opinion. Find someone who makes it clear they know what they're going.

Growing up my parents bred dogs, and now my brother has taken over the breeding. He is a veterinarian. They breed german shepherds and have for about 20 years.  Here is my advice after raising 100s of puppies:

-look at parents: are they well fed, disciplined, have no visible ailments or scars, can you pet them?

- where are puppies/adults kept? What do their kennels look like? Do they have an exercise area? Do they have clean water available? Is everything clean and not smell like they are living in their own waste?

- Are the puppies friendly? Can they be easily handled? Have they been wormed and vaccinated? Does breeder keep good records, have the puppies been vet checked?

- how many total animals do they have? Do they have a kennel license? (Check your state laws on this, they vary)

- does breeder have any civil actions against them, any attorney general consumer complaints?

- how long have they been breeding that particular dog/breed? How many litters has mother had?

-are they willing to give you past customer references?

- how did you come to learn about sale? Be wary of craigslist.

PSA-some diseases, cancer, and congenital issues are nearly impossible to predict or detect. A good breeder tries to breed best, healthy stock but there are no gaurantees.

Do your homework on breed before looking at a cutesy puppy!
