What do you think psychotic means?

I keep seeing people being described as psychotic. Most people don't seem to have a clue what the word actually means.

I've always believed that some who is psychotic is suffering from psychosis. People who are described as psychotic are suffering from sort of loss of reality, be that schizophrenia for example.
While a psychopath is described as someone suffering from a mental disorder that is violent in nature or amoral.

It's a mental health disorder, people throw it around in jest, but I think that's wrong. Same as when people reply to me "oh yeah, I have OCD too, I can't stand my house being dirty lol", when I tell them I have OCD. It's misguided; we really should try not to use real disorders as hyperboles for situations that don't actually pertain to the disorders.

Results back my concerns. I see this all the time.. 'psychotic killer' etc when in fact they were not actually experiencing psychosis (which could be seeing or hearing things which others don't, experiencing paranoid, disordered thoughts). 😥

Mental health issues.  I usually correlate it with having a psychotic episode meaning hallucinating and stuff.

My mother is legitimately psychotic, she has mental health issues that she struggles with every day and frequently has psychotic episodes. So when I tell people she's "psychotic" they just think I don't get along with my mother and while that's true, that's not what I mean...🤦🏼‍♀️

It's a disorder when a person is disconnected from reality. 
 
It's also used in unfortunate jest to describe a person who seems like they are not in tune with reality.

They do sound similar but psycophathy is  a personality disorder, often branded as 'antisocial' in nature while Psychosis in the P in PEN scale and refers to a lack of grounding in reality. I can see why people get confused though.

A mental disorder that creates a disconnect from reality. 
What you based this on could've been true, though. They could've had a psychotic break, watching a man die. They could've not fully understood or disconnected so her statement could still be true. Whether or not she meant it in that context, I'm not sure.
