you do get over them, but you will always have a special place. I wouldn't go back with my first, and I'm happily married, but I like seeing where he is in life via social media and i feel happy/sad/excited for him when necessary during certain life events.

I still love him in the I hope he's happy in his life.  But that was 10 years ago. I'm happily married to the love of my life and we have a wonderful family.  But I still remember him and will love the time we had as teenagers.

Mine was horrible and used to abuse me but I didn't realise it at the time. So yes. Yes i did.

I think it depends what kind of a person you are. I was one of those people who couldnt get rid of any piece of unnecessarry shit so my home was full of reminders. My mind was also very similar, I felt like forgetting someone completely was very disrespectful no matter what they did. 
Well, then I changed. 
I realized these people and things are making me miserable and holding onto them is not out of choice but out of fear of losing. 
My suggestion; just accept that you were mistaken to be with the person, and he/she does not matter anymore. And I promise, it will fade away and you will be glad that he/she is out of your life.
