Help on ovulation?

Question

I don't think I really understand the process of ovulation relative to your period and getting pregnant. 
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that when you ovulate, your chances of getting pregnant increase. Is this your fertile window? Or is your fertile window before or after you ovulate? 
On my period calendar, it always says that my chances of pregnancy is high during my ovulation period. But I also heard that you can really only get pregnant 6 days after you ovulate? Or something like that...
I don't know, I'm confused. All I know is, I'm trying my best to AVOID pregnancy. Please help me lol.
Edit: I know how to avoid pregnancy, I do use condoms and birth control, I'm just asking what exactly is ovulation and how it corresponds to pregnancy..

Yes, your chances of pregnancy increase during your ovulation window. 
Although the egg is only viable for 24 hours (your ovulation day), your partner's sperm can survive in the vagina for up to 5 days under favourable conditions, which is why it is referred to as a fertile window. 
Ovulation typically occurs 2 weeks before your expected period, given that your cycle is fairly regular.
