NICU and breastfeeding HELP
I was induced early due to preeclampsia. 8 hours into labor, when my water broke... My babie's heart rate dropped to 60! They put a long tube strait into my cervix and were flooding my uterus with 500ml of fluid to try to uncompress his cord and get him oxygen. It was not working because they cord was compressed around his neck. I ended up having to rush for an emergency c-section. He was born with severe distress weighing 5 pounds 6 ounces and having a blood sugar of 14! They hooked him up to an iv of dextrose to get his blood sugar up, but as a few days past... It was obvious he couldn't regulate his blood sugar. He was transferred to a level III NICU. I discharged early crying and pleading with my doctor that I needed to be with my baby, and I would take care of myself. I can thankfully say that other than the first 24 hours... My son's first 6 days of life have been only on breastmilk. I have to pump to give my milk to him because of the situation, but he spends time at the breast after his bottle at each feeding. I am now reaching a point that I am getting dangerously close to only having enough in the NICU fridge for the next feeding I pump at the end of each feeding. I am beginning to feel the pressure of needing to somehow get ahead of the game enough to have some on reserve. It is very hard essentially living in a small room with no bed to sleep still having staples in my belly from a c-section, and only taking OTC ibuprofen for pain management because my baby cannot afford to be lathargic due to pain meds in the breastmilk. ANY suggestions for how to be able to get my supply enough ahead of his feelings that I can relax a little?
