First timer! What happens next?

Found out yesterday I'm pregnant after a year of trying!!
I'm now wondering what will happen at my first GP appointment (UK). Will they take bloods or do they take your word for it?
I'm also eager to find out how far along I am because I have irregular periods so it's impossible to date it!
