my mother in law is waiting for her dog to pass. the dog has congestive heart failure and several other issues. she's not eating, barely drinking, and is hardly moving. it tears me apart, seeing her dog suffer. it's not my place to say anything, so I'm trying to be supportive of her decision, but it's hard.

most dogs and cats do not pass naturally. if they do, it usually is very painful. congestive heart failure can cause a build up of fluid in the chest and abdomen..this can make it difficult to breath and makes them feel like they're drowning. I've been a vet tech for 8 years now, and seen this multiple times, so I know what I'm talking about. the kindest thing to do is end the suffering so they can go peacefully and know that you relieved their pain.

We recently lost 2 18 year old cats in the span of about a year. Our first kitty, Snowy, suffered for about 3 months before we decided to put her down. It was a long and hard 3 months, and if I could do it over again I would have let her go peacefully instead of being selfish and dragging out her misery just because I didn't want to let her go. When her sister fell ill earlier this year, we put her down much sooner, as her kidneys were failing and we knew she's had a long, happy life. It's never easy, but you have to choose what's best for your pet, and it's not always what you want.

This is our old man Oscar. He's a rescue so we only know he's between 14-17. He's so skinny bc he's old but he isn't in pain, he eats, and he's happy. But he's starting to try and nip at everyone who walks in the door because of his deteriorating eyesight. You can see how cloudy his eyes are in the picture. We're probably gonna have to put him down soon before he goes to either bite a kid, or someone who's gonna kick the shit out of him and break ribs. Part of owning animals is knowing what's best for them, including when it's time to put them down. You need to talk to your mom about it because extending this dogs suffering isn't helping anyone.

but when we see our pets suffering and in pain we know it's time. I wish we could do it for people too.

Maybe find an article to show her that her baby is in pain and as much as we don't want to let go because it's so hard at times we have to. She can cremate the baby so she will always have her loved one with her. But putting the baby down is painless and so rewarding when you know you are taking that hurt away! Bless her heart
