When do you think it's the right time to ask your boyfriend if he wants kids?

I don't mean to start trying but I just want to know if he wants kids because that would be a deal breaker for me if he didn't. We've been together for about 4 months now, we recently exchanged 'I love you' for the first time but I've been concerned that maybe he doesn't want kids because he's quite a bit older than me. When do you think it is appropriate to ask?

I asked my fiancé if he wanted kids, if he wanted to get married, we talked about religion and all sorts of other things within the first year of our relationship. We talked about them again over the years as well. But my opinion is that you need to know the answers to all questions that are fundamentally important in a long term relationship, marriage and any deal breakers very early on. I don't intend to waste my time on someone who couldn't give me what I need from a relationship. We still don't have kids and don't plan on kids until we're married for a few years, but I know he wants them and that's what counts at this point

I typically try to gauge their opinion then bring it up. Like if hes around kids playing with em and such id be like oh your so good with them and such. I personally dont want kids so I typically talk about it relatively early because i wont be with someone who wants them

How old is old, generally men are more likely to settle down when older.  However if this man is older and already have children it's maybe a different story.  I believe it's important for people to think, think how they truely feel in the relationship and how it's going.  I find in this app and in my personal life, people continue a relationship to the extreme (getting pregnant) when the relationship is not going well.
I would say this topic as well as what you both see how the future going is normal at this stage.  You don't have to be heavy but I think both of you would like to know where you are at I am sure.
Better know now than to late, people forget that if you want children, you need to date, settle down and then have children.  Not really ideia basing a relationship on a mistake, even if you want kids nor to rush things.

Personally after my 1st relationship I started finding out up front like 1st date if they want to have kids at some point. I would ask what they see for their life in the future. If they talk about wanting to just have fun/party I knew that they weren't the way to go. I would only date men who saw the family life for their future because that was my future goal as well. I think it saves a lot of headache if you find out as early as possible.
