Is she getting enough?

Question

So baby was discharged from NICU today and we're home. Ive been trying breastfeeding and at first she only took a little and didn't seem interested. Today I tried again, and she latched with the nipple shield and did pretty well, I wanna say maybe 5-10 minutes? She ended up knocking out. Like k.o lol. I pump and have a ton of milk stored up, and she was taking 2 oz from the bottle so now that I just breast fed and she's out, how do I know if she's getting enough? Should I feed her the bottle just in case? Any tips? Thank you!

I don't think she would have passed out if she was still hungry, so I would assume she got enough, good luck on your journey of motherhood! She's adorable!❤

Breastfed babies will stop when they are full. Her tummy is still really small, so I wouldn't worry about her not getting enough. If she is content and asleep, she is full :) milk drunk is the term for being knocked out cold haha I attached a picture of a baby's stomach size, visuals always help me.

Also babies get a lot out of the breast. It's super surprising how efficient they are. My daughter always ate for less than 10 minutes since she was born (unless she falls asleep) and she is a 22 pound 9 month old. Don't worry!

Try topping her up with a bottle. I used to express as well and used to get so anxious when only breastfeeding, you will get more confident as she gets older 😊

Just be concious about if you have an oversupply, which I did while I was exclusively pumping before j could exclusively breastfeed. The lactation consultant said to make sure that baby is getting hind milk and not just the formilk. I ended up pumping Evey other feeding just to make sure he was getting enough of the fatty hind milk for the weight gain.

Her stomach is very small, very very small. Babies usually stop when they're full. She definitely wouldn't had fell asleep if she wasn't eating enough

As long as she's gaining weight, she's getting enough. The amount of time they nurse can be deceiving. My son nurses on average for about 5-6 minutes each session. He's six months now and weighs 18.4 lbs and we just started solids. He was 7.4lbs at birth, so I'd say he's getting enough 😂. I had anxiety in the beginning though because he would also zonk out while eating and I was always scared he wasn't getting enough.

my baby was not NICU but I always worried whether he was getting enough because I felt I had low supply.  found this scale called a HATCH scale.  I wish I had known about them when my son was smaller.  it has an app and other cool features but ultimately you weigh the baby.  feed the baby.  weigh the baby and it will tell you exactly how much baby ate.  it ran around $130
