Do you think the word mentally ill gets thrown around lightly?

Politically I'm registered as independent. I don't swing hard one side or the other but straight down the line in between. Yet in my observation of the news articles and people's comments on Facebook the word "Mentally Ill " is thrown out a lot for conservatives main thoughts on the choices of liberals.

Examples: Calling Transgender people mentally ill or any type of LGBT people. Calling people mentally ill for sticking up for illegal immigrants. Calling people mentally ill for dressing up naked that are holding up signs saying "not asking for it"

Pretty much any type of liberal thing that is posted conservatives always use the "reasoning" behind it is because someone is mentally ill.

Now my question is, do you think conservatives are in the wrong for using the excuse that every action of a liberal is mentally ill and a crappy excuse or do you think conservatives calling liberals mentally ill for these types of things are valid and correct?

Answer 1: Conservatives are wrong for using the term mentally ill.

Answer 2: Conservatives are right for using the term mentally ill.
