gifts for significant other?

So just a question for everyone, do you prefer gifts to be purchased or made? the reason i ask, is i always make my wife something for special occasions. rarely do i "buy her something" when it comes to birthdays, holidays, and etc... for instance recently i made her a photo frame i etched a poem and other things into by hand. she didnt seem supprised, because i always make her something i presume? its hard for me to truely say if she loved it or if she said she did, but i put like 20 hours into this thing, and our birthdays are coming up and i have an idea with an old, large mirror (for her to do her makeup) but not sure if making it or customising it woule be something she adores compared to something i went a purchased (cause that woukd supprise her too?) sorry, probably confusing to read lol my brain doesnt work like most lol.
