Can eating chicken eggs be ethical?

Jodi

Obviously the most ethical thing to do is cut out all animal products and by-products. But I was discussing this with my mom yesterday when she asked me about being vegan. We talked about how the dairy industry cannot possibly be ethical because the cows must be forcefully impregnated in order to produce milk, and obviously forcing them to give birth over and over takes a huge toll on their body and quality of life. Plus, they tend to be riddled with infections. But what about eggs? Since healthy chickens lay eggs without mating or using any hormonal treatments, could eggs be collected and sold ethically? For example, if I found a local farm or a friend that did not butcher their chickens and kept them in a large coop and gave them room to roam and treated them well, from a moral standpoint, would it be wrong to eat the eggs? If no, please explain! I want to learn and so does my mom. :)
