Should I wash handmade baby items?

My mother-in-law knitted a bunch of baby clothes..sweaters, hats, socks, blankets. I'm just wondering if I should wash these before he uses them with the other baby stuff or if they will get ruined? FTM here!

Up to you really but hand wash for sure.

I washed all the hand made stuff by hand with cold water and baby detergent. You don't always know where the materials are processed so I wasn't going to risk a rash on fresh baby skin

I doubt you need to wash them but when you do watch them in the future, those kind of items are hand wash only. you will ruin them if you put them in a washing machine.

When I get things from my mother thats the first thing I do.. bc shes a smoker and everything she gives us stinks of cigarettes.. but i think even if it didn't smell i would still wash it, if its for newborn or baby with sensitive skin.. just bc u never know if theres traces of perfume etc on it that my irritate baby

Most considerate knitters/crocheters will tell you if they've been washed, but as a rule I never do because each mom and baby have different skin needs. 
I would hand wash them in lukewarm water with your baby detergent of choice and lay flat to air dry, unless they are specified able to be machine washed
