Are you obligated to help family out?

Recently my brother came back into my life. He is already asking for money for his room they rent. I'm having a baby and they recently bought me something off of my baby registry. It's pretty much the same price of what they're asking for. So I almost feel like I'm paying for the gift that they bought me. I know that sounds silly but it's making me feel guilty that I need to give them the money

Honestly, if they knew they didn't have the money why would they buy something that expensive (not sure of the price but still). I wouldn't feel obligated to give them money, my OLDER sister used to guilt trip me all the time for money because she needed it for school or had to make a payment and she would "pay it back later". I don't feel like I'm their caregiver nor should I have to dish out money. Especially if you don't have a great relationship and knowing his past he has done you wrong.

Thanks for the help gals. I politely told him I didn't have the money (which I really don't) even suggested giving the gift back. He was saying that they would on the street by four if I didn't send the money. I quickly knew right away he was playing me like he used too. I feel better about not falling for it.

You are not obligated to help anyone. Family or not. And only you can decide if you feel comfortable helping them.

You are not obligated to help family. They bought you a gift. They should have made sure their bills were paid first. My family helped me with my daughter because I was a single mom. But they never throw that in my face when I can't help them. I help when I can, but they know, my bills also need to be paid.

I'm the OP. I am having a hard time deciding if I can help. Me and my bro hAve had a rocky relationship. He has been known to use and abuse me in the past. He lived with once before and things went terrible bad. I feel very guilty because I'm thinking if he didn't by me the gift then he wouldn't need this money back 😔 it was nice of them to do that for me off my registry but I feel as if in paying for the gift ultimately..... Sorry if that sounds selfish. Just don't know if they are playing me and getting the money back or if they really need it

I would always help my siblings out. I don't give them loans as I don't expect them to pay it back. Same with my parents.

You're not obigated, and it depends on if he will pay you back when he can. My sister will ask and ask and ask and expect people to give her anything she asks for, but never does anything in return. If you have the money, and only if you have the money (don't put yourself in a tough financial situation), then if you feel like you should, go for it. If you don't want to you don't have to.

My family would say that I am, but I sure as hell don't feel that way for all of them.

If my sister ever came to me needing money, I'd turn her down in a heart beat. While I was living with her, I was so malnourished and starved - there were times I couldn't even sleep it off because the hunger pains were so bad. And it's all because she took almost every cent I made and threatened to kick me out on to the streets if I complained.

So fuck her.

But I'd be more obligated to help out my brothers or my folks.
