My Father is a racist Nazi sympathizer
Before this post gets deleted or moved for rule breaking, I would like to point out that while this particular example applies to race, what I am asking is how do you convince someone to see their view is hurtful. This situation is race related, but you can answer in general how you educate a stubborn person on a topic they are ignorant to. Read on.
I'm wondering how CC would handle this. So, my dad is 56 years old, grew up in a diverse part of New Jersey where he was a minority. We never talked politics my entire life, but this election sparked some discussion. It became clear that he doesn't exactly understand a lot of social concepts. Admittedly, before my time in CC I was guilty as well. He didn't vote, but he had the opinion that Trump would be good for the country, he responds to BLM with all lives matter, he says when he was growing up black people were 'poor and stole' and he has nothing against them. He believes what Trump said about there being good and bad on both sides. When confronted with his ignorances and racism he replies with 'I have black friends.' I call him out of this, I talk about white privilege, I talk about things I've learned on CC, I literally call him a racist Nazi sympathizer to his face. All I get are justifications. My father is a smart man, he is a good man, he doesn't hate but he is blindly ignorant. The topic now comes up daily. He thinks POC are exaggerating their oppression, he thinks equality has been achieved. It makes my skin crawl and my blood boil. How do I get through to him? If he weren't my father I would probably not speak to him about these topics or at all but I feel like I need him to understand the harm his thought process causes. So, give me advice here Glowers.
