using opk as hpt

so, I've heard you can use an opk if you don't have an hpt handy. AF is due today, so I thought I'd give it a whirl. how accurate is this method of testing. I can't get to the store for a hpt until tonight and of course I'm dying to know. has anyone ever had good results with this? TIA
