ear ache while teething

my 8 1/2 month old is getting his top 2 teeth. The bottom teeth came without pain but the top 2 have been bothering him a bit. I've noticed his muffling his ear. looks like he's holding headphones on like singers do in the studio... does teething cause ear aches? or is it a jaw ache? or just him playing with his ear?
