Depends on how old you are. The younger your are the longer you should date.

There is no set perfect amount of time to date before marriage, it all depends on what works for each individual couple, I got married to my hubby a year & a day after our 1st date, in November it'll be 4 years together, we're in our late 30's, I'd been single a really long time before we met & he was recently divorced after 10 years of a frequently miserable marriage, we were both really ready to be happy & loved & we're a really good match so we didn't need a lot of time to figure out we were ready & wanted to be married, but I have a friend who met her man in college & they dated for 11 years before they felt ready for marriage, now they've been married for over 15 years

I answered 3-4 years because that's what I think would be a good amount of time for me in my current relationship (early 20's, been dating current partner for 1.5 years). 
But I think it is definitely different for everyone and each different relationship/situation.
