Apparently the middle is safest if you have the proper anchors. Next best option is behind the driver since in a collision you are most likely to maneuver the car in a way to protect yourself (and your side of the car).

We have a mini van so my youngest is right behind the drivers seat and my oldest is in the clear back, we'll be putting #3 right behind the passenger seat. But with my oldest we just had an SUV and had her in the middle
