Boyfriend with asthma, what do I need to know?

My boyfriend as asthma and I'm worried he has an attack while I'm around and I won't know what hat to do 
He also tries to not use his pump during an attack so he won't become reliant on it, will this actually work or is it just putting him at risk?

He will need to use his puffer during an attack it doesn't matter if he doesn't want to rely on it I don't think he wants to die (which can happen if an attack is bad enough). All you can do really is stop him from panicking so calm him down try get him to take slower deeper breaths and get him to take his puffer

Doesn't want to rely on it? 😂 lol as someone who has the most severe case of asthma you could possibly have I think that was the most hilarious thing I've ever read. You can't just stop having an asthma attack, you need to use the medication you're given to control it including your rescue inhaler.  Here's some truth, if you have been diagnosed with asthma, you now rely on the medication your doctor gives you to be healthy and be able to breathe. There is no way around it. you can't just train your lungs to not need the meds it doesn't work that way. You need your rescue inhaler at all times. At ALL TIMES. 
If he's ever in a situation where he doesn't have one, he can try a few things but in my case they have only given me temporary relief until I got my inhaler. 
Getting in a steamy hot shower and breathing in the steam, or standing over a boiling pot of water on a stove and breathing it in.  Caffeine can help, hot things work better like coffee or plain hot water.  I am on 5 different daily medications to keep my asthma under control. Sometimes they don't work, something as simple as the weather having a sudden change can make it spiral out of control. That's when my doctor puts me on steroids and those really help. 
I also have a nebulizer during those flair ups because my rescue inhaler alone doesn't work.  It's better to buy a nebulizer and liquid albuterol you can use at home rather than going to the ER for an asthma attack you can't get control of because they will literally do the same thing, a breathing treatment. 
He needs to make sure he's not pushing himself and ignoring the fact that he's struggling to breathe. Struggling to breathe can lead to exhaustion..dying in your sleep from your body being so exhausted. If can also cause your rib cage to become deformed because you spend too long breathing incorrectly. He needs to take this seriously. It's important.
