What is "Red Pill" psychology? Part II

Sa

The reason I made the poll in Part I is because I was really confused about seeing "Red Pill" grouped with MRA and a Reddit group of the same name on this app (I'm using Glow). Initially, not knowing what MRA was but knowing what Red Pill was, I though, "Oh, sweet, a Reddit group for Red Pillers!" I quickly realized that this Reddit groups is not what I thought it would be; a group of whiny, disgusting, man-boys.

That's when I realized when someone says "Red Pill" they're not talking about the Red Pill that I took in 1999 when the cult-classic film "The Matrix" was released. They're talking about an Alt-Right Extremist Hate group.

***Movie Spoilers for those who have not seen The Matrix***

For anyone not familiar with the "Red Pill vs. Blue Pill Scenario", I will explain.

A young man named Neo (Keanu Reeves) is introduced to a man named Morpheus (Laurence Fishburbe) who informs him that his entire life has been a lie; a virtual reality. The true reality of his situation- the situation of the entire human race- is one of enslavement by a race of machines that have taken over the planet. This machine race farms humans for electrochemical energy. Humans are grown in pods and live out their entire lives with their consciousness trapped in a virtual reality that is 'safe', 'pleasing', and 'predictable', entirely unaware of their enslaved state in Reality.

Morpheus then offers Neo a Red or Blue Pill.

My

While some people do actually believe we live in a virtual reality, most Red Pillers, like myself, believe in the allegory that the film teaches which is that we live in a society that is controlled by an elite group that manipulates our social structure in order to keep their power and their anonymity.

Clearly, this has nothing to do with misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, racism, religion, class, etc. So I'm wondering, how do you all think "Red Pill" has become the term for such hateful people, like the ones on Reddit? Were you aware of where the term originated from, The Matrix? Do you think it's fair of these extremists to use the term "Red Pill" to claim and perpetuate their own ideal 'reality'?

(I realize this may not at all be a big deal for some people, but I was honestly very confused by the amount of hate Red Pill was getting when it had nothing to do with the issues, such as misogyny and racism, that people were discussing and associating with it.)
