Would you be mad at the child?

So my friends babysitter/roommate is mad at her 20 month old son because he jumped on her coffee table and broke it ( its one that folds up into an eating table type thing). I know how kids can be, one second they're doing one thing and the next they're off doing something else but I feel like a child preparing to  jump on a coffee table is something that can be easily seen and prevented. If anything I would be more upset with myself for not watching the child well enough. Ive watched her son before and he climbed under my coffee table and pushed the glass peice up and over with his feet but I caught him doing it and grabbed the glass piece and pulled him out from underneath before setting it back in place. I just want to know what your opinions are.

I don't get upset with children that young. They need to be taught and they can't always tell if something is dangerous or reckless.

A 20 month old cannot possibly anticipate the damage his actions would cause. I would blame myself for not having taught him to act better and for not watching him close enough. 
My daughter went through this phase of wanting to climb on our dining table. We had to put a stop to it before she got hurt. But sometimes kids are just too fast and do things you would never imagine that they would do.

Well, yeah. I'd be mad at the child as a first reaction, but then I'd talk to them about it calmly, and get over it and start keeping a better eye on him.

it's silly to be mad at a 20 month old. the kids mom however should offer to buy a new table, maybe one that's a little sturdier.

The child isn't even two yet. That is too young for them to really understand the potential damage their actions can cause. They are still learning how to "explore" safely. I'd be more upset at the babysitter who wasn't watching my toddler close enough. Accidents happen--it's hard to keep your eyes glued to a kid 24/7, but this seems preventable.

I don't see why you can't be mad. I can't be mad without actually putting the blame on them. Even knowing full well it was a mistake, you can still be mad that something bad happened at all. Feelings aren't the problem, it's how you act on them.
