Early pregnancy test

So I ovulated on the 1st and I'm getting very antsy about taking a pregnancy test. I've had light spotting this past week, which isn't abnormal for me since I off birth control. I took a pregnancy test today hoping I'd get a light positive, alas, it was very negative. I'm not supposed to test until the 17th. Is it too soon? What the earliest you can see a faint positive?
