Skilled and unskilled work?
I've come across this debate on twitter and thought it would be interesting to get some opinions on here too.
Is there such a thing as unskilled work? And do people working 'unskilled' jobs still deserve to earn a living wage?
I work in marketing/design while my boyfriend is a bar man. While he spends 10 hours + straight on his feet with 1 break, I spend an 8 hour day sat at a desk. I have the freedom to go for a walk or grab a snack whenever I want. He works unsociable hours and shift patterns. He deals with customers, making drinks, food, complaints, cleaning, stock counting and restocking. I sit and play on photoshop creating designs.
I feel like his job is ten times harder than mine! Sure I got a degree first but anyone can learn how to use photoshop really. Yet his job is looked down upon whereas mine isn't. He like many others works for minimum wage so therefore not a living wage. I admit I don't get paid much more but its a salary with sick pay and holidays.
There isn't really such a thing as unskilled work, everything is a skill only some things you don't learn through a degree. And all jobs should be viewed equally and pay enough to live off. People need to stop looking down on certain jobs. These jobs are often where people are worked too hard for little benefits.
