Not tithing, the cause of someone's problems?

So, I've experienced something that has brought up some controversial issues.

Recently my husband and I's car broke down, and now our water heater has sprung a leak. My father in law has told us it's because "we don't tithe". Any time we've struggled, he has brought it to our lack of tithing.

Do you think this is true?

I do not. Especially if Christians are meant to believe in a forgiving and all loving God. Why would he cause people so many issues because of maybe 5 bucks? Which doesn't even go to anyone in need. It goes to the churches bills and their needs.

Anyways, do you believe tithing could be the cause of someone's suffering?

Would a loving God really punish people over a couple of dollars?
