Medicaid Affecting Citizenship
Hi guys! So I’m needing some advice and input and y’all are some of the smartest ladies I know.
I am in training to be a doula. I’ve finished most of my certification and am now working on getting my certifying births.
I have a potential client who has contacted me for help.
She is a US citizen. Her husband is not, but is working on getting his citizenship. Their attorney advised them that her being on Medicaid may negatively affect his chances.
She is due in Dec. with no insurance and scared to go on Medicaid. She cannot afford private insurance and cannot afford a midwife or medical bills. She has only had one pre-natal appointment her entire pregnancy. She’s wanting to have a home birth, for many reasons. However, it’s going to most likely be an unattended birth. So my questions are:
1- why would Medicaid affect citizenship being granted to her husband?
2- does anyone know any midwives or doctors in the Jacksonville, FL area willing to work with a payment plan/pro bono/super cheap discount?
3- as a doula, my scope ends with anything medical. I’m unable to catch or deliver the baby, do any checks, or provide any medical advice or services. Many doulas do unattended birth, but this would be my first. I would make sure she signed a legal contract stating if anything went wrong, I would be limited to my scope and I would be clear of any liability. Should I do this birth, knowing it’s only my second ever, and it’d be my very first home birth?
