Thoughts on Grade Retention?

Question

I taught a 2nd grader last year and promoted him to 3rd. He was below level but with accommodations and modifications did alright. The 3rd Grade teacher would like to send him back to me after a month of school. He's in the process of getting tested for SPED. 
This poll isnt necessarily about MY situation. I just want to know your views on this subject.

I'd think sending him back after the year has already started would be detrimental. 
In general I can see it being used as a last resort. I'd have to look more into the research though.

Sending him back to 2nd Grade would be detrimental. I don't know the severity of his situation, but if he's been evaluated for SPED, why would the 3rd Grade teacher want to send him down a grade? Every student has different needs to help them reach goals and be successful, and it seems like that teacher is looking for an easy way out.

I think a lot of teachers see it as helpful in the cases where it's implemented, and I'd defer to them to be honest. They know more than we do.

I don't support retention. Also, not sure where you work, but in my state, if a child is retained and then receives a SPED classification they are put back in their original grade level (here meaning 3rd grade). Some studies show students who are retained are less likely to graduate high school.

As a teacher, grade retention is appropriate ONLY when the student has failed to meet grade level standards with appropriate accommodations and scaffolding.

It’s pretty important to intervene at this time. I think the evaluation will probably be significantly helpful in deciding how to help. As a parent, I would’ve requested a student study and eval last year. I would’ve insisted on summer school. If the third grade teacher believes the chip can not handle third grade material, then he should return to the second grade. Building a strong foundation now, will ensure future success.

Helpful when necessary. I believe it should start in kindergarten but a lot of parents are too proud.

I mean yes I can see it as necessary and helpful if they are not academically at the same level as other students all it's going to do is cause him to fall even further behind. they need to go back and relearn or reunderstand things in order to get to that level would be more helpful than to have a student falling behind.

Apparently the teacher/s thought I wasn't ready for third grade, so I was held back. I was confused about it because it was never really explained to me, but I don't think I suffered adverse effects from it. I have thrived academically since then.
