Do I really need a crib?

Question

I am planning on breastfeeding and having the baby sleep in our room in a bassinet as part of a pack and play that will be big enough for an older baby. I'm feeling like we don't need a traditional crib. Pros and cons?

Our daughter didn't sleep in her crib more than a few times. It was a huge waste of money - although we got it second hand, so it wasn't a lot of money. I loved having her with us through the night. We all slept better and bonded so well. When she slept in the crib she woke up constantly.  She slept through the night since she was one month old if she stayed with me.

Honestly, she still sleeps in my bed a lot of nights at 3 1/2. Waking up to her little face and her saying she loves me first thing is the best way to wake up. I keep thinking about how this won't last forever and when she's 13 and hates me for some teenager reason I'll have all these awesome memories.

Thanks for the responses. I was feeling like I was missing something. I also feel some social/societal pressure to have a perfect nursery with a traditional crib. My husband and I aren't very conventional:-)

Im getting a pack and play also! Nothing else except a bouncer for the daytime and such. Im on a very limited budget and the pack and play sounds just perfect. I really dont think a seperate crib is necessary.

Nope we aren't getting a crib either there's so many people around you telling you what you need...no you don't need a crib neither do we I think baby will be just fine. Don't feel pressured in to anything.

Honestly, mine has slept in his pack n play his whole life, and he's 18 months. I got a nice little mattress for it on amazon, and we just didn't have the space for a big crib. He's been fine! When we redo the kids room before baby 2 comes (we are building another room), he will move to his big crib we got from a friend, and we got a nice one for her when she comes. He doesn't know the difference at this point, and it really was a space issue for us.

No, you don't need a traditional crib. Your baby can sleep in the bassinet until he's able to roll over, and then you can just use the pack and play. I cosleep with all of my kids while they were little, until they decide they are done co-sleeping… Sometimes that's as a toddler and sometimes that's much earlier. We were given a crib that converted into a toddler bed by friends. My oldest didn't use it until he was ready for a toddler bed. (He did sleep during nap time sometimes in a pack n play, but most of the time just on our bed…) My second and third also never use it as a crib. But my fourth want to do bed of her own to spread out in before she was old enough to be in a toddler bed, so she actually used the crib.
