Do you vote for someone based on the person or issues they claim they will handle?

I didn't vote, but to me I think I would vote for someone based on a mixture of both. How about you?

I think based on what they fight for, what they fight against, and if I trust they will take care of the minorities too. I don’t want a president who does the “popular” thing. I’d love a president who really did want to make America great. Unlike the wackado we have now.

It depends on their track record and the issue.

Different things— their platform on the issues, their track record, debate performance, what they say in speeches, and their party usually plays a role too. 
I’ll look at past leadership or voting records if they are available. If, for example, there is a senator(like Obama) running I will look how they voted in Congress. If it’s a governor running I will look at their track record as governor. 
I’ll also look for their “rating” different organizations that represent issues that are important for me. An example of this would be looking at a senator or representative’s rating with NARAL or Planned Parenthood.

1. Their stances
2. Their history and if they have stuck to their guns or changed where needed
3. Their affiliation with different organizations. 
Like trump wasn't an option for me or Mike Pence because they, the pair of them together, have a history of, and still ongoing
1. Racial discrimination and charged statements
2. Opposition to LGBT+ rights/support for conversion therapy as well as targeting trans military personnel
3. Sexist remarks as well as continual dismissal of female opponents. 
4. Bullying and cowing opponents, interviewers, and employees. As well as mocking those with disability and inciting violence at rallies. 
5. Denying climate change/science in general etc  
6. Sympathizing with neo nazi pieces of shit
7. Ignoring the biggest woman's march ever but showing up to pander at a minuscule anti women rally.
Even Hillary didn't meet everything I would have liked🤷🏻‍♂️. Bernie was cool (though too "socialist" for Murica) in the fact that he has, since his younger days, been in favor of, and actively protested for, equal rights as far as I know. Also a clear favor for fact based arguments and education. That means a ton to me.
