Short Cervix and Placenta Previa
Just sharing in the hopes anyone else has went through something similar and can share their stories.
It started with my second child, I lost my mucus plug at 29 weeks and had preterm labour symptoms thereafter, I was admitted to hospital and had a positive FFN test but I was able to rest at home until she came at a healthy 37 weeks, and I was able to continue on with my second home birth.
This time (my third and last child) I lost my mucus plug at 11 weeks and discovered I had marginal placenta previa on my midway ultrasound at 19 weeks. After having preterm labour symptoms, I asked my midwife for a cervical length and it revealed it was shorter than it should have been at that time but she never thought more about it, fastforward to 22 weeks when I had to go back to get better pictures of baby's position, the preterm labour never went away so I asked for another cervical check....sure enough, I had dropped from 3.3cm at 19 weeks to 2.9cm three weeks later at 22 weeks, I was also funnelling, and my placenta had moved even closer to my cervix, due to the contractions. So my midwife referred me to an obstetrician and I saw him today for the first time at 23w4d
I knew that the complications I had were not normal, but it didn't prepare me for the info I was going to get from him.
Suddenly I am on complete rest, I am not allowed to travel, I need to be with someone as much as possible in case I need to go to the hospital in an emergency, I will be getting steroids at 25 weeks for the baby's lungs to develop, I will be getting ultrasounds every 3 weeks until I deliver and he didn't sound very convinced that I will be pregnant much longer. I "definitely" won't be making it to term he says. He kept repeating baby survival statistics at this stage up until 27 weeks.
We discussed possible reasons for the cervical weakness and came to the conclusion that it was probably due to the D&C; I had to have after our first loss and the colposcopy biopsies I had inbetween my first and second children. Sigh. Now we are playing the waiting game and each day is a milestone. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
