My birth story (finally).

Meg

I loved reading these stories in the last trimester of pregnancy. I found them really calming and inspiring. They were the last thing I would read at night before going to sleep.

Four weeks on and I am finally sharing my story. The base part of this was written the night I had my son as a message to a girlfriend who asked about my labour/birth. The rest I have been slowly writing during my little one's overnight feeds.

At my 40 week appointment my obstetrician booked me in to be induced due to borderline liver function and low platelets (He had been monitoring me for Cholestasis since 31 weeks). So at 40+3 (12/9) I went to the hospital so they could put prostaglandin gel on my cervix to start my cervix dialating, they did all this at 6pm. I sent my husband home at 9:30pm so he could be well rested for the day to come. I went into labour at 3:30 am Wednesday 13/9. I slept very erratically after that as my contractions were coming very close together and I was having back labour. My obstetrician came to break my waters at 7 am and I was already 7 cm dilated. My midwife told me to call my hubby as she was sure I would be having a baby by midday.

However not long after that my little one decided to roll in to posterior position. So after a few hours we finally got him to turn back (just by doing what my body told me to do) but he didn't tuck his chin to chest, causing him to have his forehead caught on my pelvis. So after 2 hours of pushing my obstetrician came in and said he needed to come out one way or another and took me down to theater to try for forceps and if that didn't work than he was planning a C-sections.

So they gave me a spinal block (OMG that was amazing relief after 12 hours of nothing but continuous back labour) and managed to get him out with the forceps (and one hell of an episiotomy). At 4:41pm 13/9 my beautiful baby boy George was born. The obstetrician literally just threw him on my chest after yelling baby lol. I absolutely lost all control of myself and began crying hysterically (from happiness). After some quick cuddles they took him off me so the pediatrician could examine him.

After that I had some hemorrhaging (2 litres and to hear hubby tell the story it was like a scene out of a horror movie with the doctor popping up from between my legs covered it blood 😂) so once they sorted that out I was off to recovery for a blood transfusion and little one ended up in the special nursery for a little bit due to fluid in his lungs but we finally got to be together at 9pm and I am just soooo smitten. 😍 All up I was in 1st stage for 10:25, 2nd Stage for 2:46 and 3rd for 0:09.

Having been told since, by midwives and maternal & child health nurses, that my birth experience was Atypical and on the extreme end for vaginal delivery, I definitely feel confident in doing this a second time at some point in the future.

George was 8 lbs 5 and 52 cms.
