Not only did it symbolize the interest in a preservation of slavery, but it continues as a symbol against civil rights in various groups. 
   
Student delegates from Southern colleges and universities waved battle flags on the floor of the Southern States Rights Party convention in July 1948. 
   
The so-called “Dixiecrat” Party formed in protest to the Democratic Party convention’s adoption of a civil rights plank. The Confederate flag became a symbol of protest against civil rights and in support of Jim Crow segregation.
   
In the decades after the flag fad, the Confederate flag became, as one Southern editor wrote, “confetti in careless hands.” Instead of being used almost exclusively for memorializing the Confederacy and its soldiers, the flag became fodder for beach towels, t-shirts, bikinis, diapers and baubles of every description.

For those who say “it’s not a race thing it’s a southern pride thing.” Ok, I understand that is your position on in, having a lot of southern family myself I was raised around the confederate flag and never thought twice about it being a racial thing.
But the symbol strikes fear into the hearts of so many folks, and to them it is a racist symbol. Just because you don’t intend it to be interpreted that way doesn’t mean that everybody views to the same way as you. For the sake of being decent and not displaying a symbol that the majority of people view as racist, maybe retire the confederate flag? There are other ways to show your southern pride that don’t involve attacking minorities.

I've yet to meet someone who jerks off to that flag and isn't racist. Because it is racist.
I live in Massachusetts and there are people here that fly that flag. They were all born and raised here and probably never even stepped foot in the south. All of them hate people who aren't white. Some have become legitimate neo Nazis due to the current political climate.

To other people that don't find it offensive or maybe that own one, some are just proud they live in a southern state. Like if you're born and raised in whatever state, you'd think anything to do with it may be interesting to you. There's that song that goes "Let it go.." But in this day in age, everything and or anything is offensive because individuals choose to be offended by things that aren't always meant to be.

It’s funny how everyone complains and says the American flag doesn’t represent America and when it comes to the confederate flag, apparently it REPRESENTS racism. It may have had ties with racism(so hasn’t America) but to most it’s a location thing. 
I’m proud to live in the USA. They are proud to live in the south.

From what I've studied, the confederacy supported many things as well as slavery, it's just that slavery is what gets all the attention in modern day. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.
