Letting go and coming back

I dated a guy for 8 months and then he moved to a different state. We tried the long distance thing and it wasn't working out. He had a lot of issues he had to work on himself and it was affecting the relationship negatively. He decided to end things mutually. We quit all contact with each other. We haven't spoke in 2 months and then this past weekend he texted me. Asking me how I was and we just had small talk. Eventually the conversation lead to him apologizing for how he acted and how he hurt me and that he's had a lot of clarity lately. He asked if it was ok if we kept on talking because he misses me and talking to me. I miss him too and I'm open to whatever happens, happens. He was my best friend and I'll always be here for him. I just don't know what my expectations should be and I don't want to ask since we just came in contact again. This situation just reminds me of the quote let them go and if it's meant to be they'll come back.
