If you are unmarried, do you refer to your SO as your husband/wife?
A bit of a story, the reason I'm curious... My boyfriend and I have been together almost 7 years, since we were 13. We have a 5 year old son together. We are NOT engaged, but we have been living together for 2 years (and been common law since we moved in together). A couple weekends ago we were with my boyfriend's dad and some of his dad's friends. My boyfriend and his dad were horsing around and his dad punched him, so I jokingly said, "Hey! Don't you touch my boyfriend!" Well, one of his dad's friends then says, "Boyfriend? That's weird... He's your husband." Now this guy knows full well that we aren't married, so in response I said, "No. We're not married, he's just my boyfriend for now." The friends argument was that since we're common law that makes us husband and wife. I feel that it is disrespectful to married couples, for us, as an unmarried couple, to call each other husband and wife. Just wondering what others think ☺
