Joint accounts?

How many couples really have joint bank accounts?? 
My husband and I have separate accounts for many reasons. One being that in case one of us is low on money or an odd charge occurs and overdrafts us, the other always has money. We both get paid by weekly, but I get paid the opposite weeks as him so we always have a check coming every week. 
Lately it’s starting to feel like my husband spends his money on stupid things. I just recently started back working after being off a few months so I feel like he’s just happy to have extra cash. He’s really bad to buy things thinking he will have plenty of money when there’s a bill he’s forgot to write in his little journal thing. I know he bought a $70 video game and he swore he had plenty of money left but not even a week after getting his biweekly check, he has no money. We’re not broke by any means and he makes pretty decent money. I’m just so confused as to where it all goes. I know he’s not doing anything untrustworthy, just wanna know where his money is going. 
So what are the reasons y’all have a joint account?? I personally like being able to buy stuff and not having to explain to him why I bought myself a dress or something like that.

We’re on our way to getting a joint account. Separate checking, but joined savings for bills and such. But I’m a little confused. You like being separate so you don’t have to explain why you wanted to buy yourself something. But you’re concerned of the things he’s buying for himself from “his money?” Definitely need more than a joint bank account for this one. More explanation and talking between the two of you as to bills first, and then you can buy your own fun stuff if you want to keep it separate. The boyfriend and I do it all the time. Got paid? Divvy up the cash for bills and what’s left is what you got, make it last.

Personally, we have always had a joint bank account. Not to keep tabs, or feel like you have to ask permission to buy stuff. More so to hold each other accountable so we are not just wasting money. Treating yourself and wasting money are very different. We do this so that all the money is in one pot, for bills, groceries etc... so much easier than worrying about transferring money back and forth all the time. It’s honestly just takes away a stress, and lets be honest we can all eliminate a little stress. Again it’s not to baby sit or monitor each other’s money and spending. Just have accountability when it does come to spending money it goes off the analogy are you better behaved alone or when someone’s watching. Even if it’s the 8th Starbucks run of the week 😹

We have separate bank accounts, but now he just leaves his card with me and I use it for gas and groceries when I don't have it. I also throw some cash in his account, so I guess you can call it joint?

We have a joint account but I’m considering getting a separate one. I brought this up to my husband and he flipped thinking I was going to leave him. Lol not the case. He’s so irresponsible with money and bills and I’m so sick of being over draft and not having money by the end of the week that I think this would solve the problem. Seriously he owes 500 on our credit card we where only suppose to use for gas so we can build our credit. I love my husband but he needs to get his shit together. We have 3 kids and there is no time for stupid games like this now what I mean! It would work if you both have open communication about what you buy and when bills are due and what not!

We have a joint account for all of the bills/line items that we have budgeted for, and we both have separate checking accounts. My husband earns 20x what I do, so if I ever need extra $, he'll just add more $ to our joint account (no ?'s asked).

We have separate account. And we both pay our own bills and we split house bills. If the other one falls short just let the other know and he picks up the slack. Other than that he’s free to do whatever he wants with HIS money. As long as the bills are paid it doesn’t matter

My husband and I have joint checking and savings accounts but separate credit cards. We do it this way so we can monitor one another’s spending, budget easier, etc. we have the separate credit cards so to buy gifts, little extras for ourselves, etc. We do have a budgeted amount that we can put on our individual credit card each month.

My husband and I have a joint account just because we feel that the money we have separately is still the other spouses money as well so we might as well have it in the same place🤷🏻‍♀️

This is exactly why we have a joint account. H is horrible with money. We had a joint account after about a year of dating. We both have direct deposit so I track all the money, bills, savings, etc. in a spreadsheet I created. We both get money every week for gas and bridge toll for him. We don’t really have fun money. Anything extra each month goes into savings.

My hubby and I have both a joint account for bills and separate accounts to pay for our individual credit cards (in case we want to buy a surprise gift). This works for us because our spending and saving habits are very similar. I keep a running tab of the budget for the month and we sit down and talk about our spending at our “monthly budget meeting” which is not as special as it seems. The main thing is that all the money goes into the joint pot and then is used for bills and savings. If we put anything into the separate accounts it is an equal amount and the person can spend it however they want (my friends call it a “fun fund”)
