I'd say rent untill you're sure of what you both want to do , we rent and it's really expensive we're not buying as my nana has left her house to us in her will but we definitely would of brought if we didn't have that to fall back onto as  mortgage payments are so much cheaper than rent we looked into it with a decent down payment the mortgage will of been less than half the rent we pay , so we definitely would of gone down that route if we didn't already have a house it's worth looking into though if you're serious about it , my partners sister only pays 220 for her mortgage a month if they'd of rented her house it would of been 600 a month so in the long run its cheaper if you have enough money for a decent down payment x

Be sure where you want to live, if you buy you should plan to be there for 3-5 years at a minimum.  Are you ready to put down those roots?  If yes, then go for it. If not, renting is a great option and allows you to be flexible.

Buy if you're able to. We bought instead of rented and I'm glad we did. I'm amazed at what people pay for rent, it's over double what our mortgage is and I mean for houses exactly like ours. Then you have to factor in bills. It's cheaper to buy, most that rent is because they may not have the credit to buy so they pay somebody else's mortgage and then some.

I would rent first, especially if you haven't yet been living together. If you decide to buy, you have to factor in property taxes, downpayment (and pmi, if you couldnt afford 20%down), having enough money in the bank to afford repairs (plumbing, roofing, heating, structural, etc), renovations if wanted (painting, flooring, updating). The cost of owning is generally way more expensive than renting, because with renting the landlord takes care of things that go wrong. Owning can be nice, but if you cant comfortably afford the mortgage/taxes/downpayment while still socking away a reasonable amount to pay for repairs as they pop up, you're better off renting for the time being.

If you're absolutely sure about where you want to live and can afford it, buy a house. Be prepared for the process. It takes good credit, dwn pymt, a lot of paper signing etc. If you're not ready for all that, rent till you are prepared.
