My Labor and Delivery Story!!!!!

Theresa • Wife, Mommy, Advocate for children with special needs. “Down Syndrome was an unplanned journey, but we LOVE our tour guide!”

On 11/13 we went in for our routine 38 weeks appt. After speaking with my OB we decided we'll be induced on Wednesday 11/15, but she wanted us to have a growth scan because my fundal height was measuring large. I also have a large fibroid the size of a grapefruit.

So my husband and I go to get our weekly NST and then get an ultrasound done. The tech asked if my OB thought my fundal height was too large or too small. I confirmed, too large. He was silent through the whole scan. He stated it would only take a few minutes for the scan and 15 min later I was a little concerned. Luckily my baby did great during the NST, so I knew she was okay.

Once the tech was done, he walked us back to labor and delivery. Which they have never done before. He hands the paper to my nurse, she looks at it and says, well okay! Looks at me and says, Guess who's getting induced today!? My jaw dropped! I looked at my husband and he had the same shocked look on his face. I said, not that I'm complaining, but why? My fluids were down to 2.58! They were just over a 9 the Thursday before.

After a call to my doctor for approval, they give me something to soften my cervix. 12 hours later and I'm still dilated to a 1. Which is where I was when I first got admitted. By this time they asked if I wanted to do the folley balloon. She explained what it was and I said yes! Let's do it! They asked if I wanted medication, and I said no. I thought she asked if I wanted an epidural. I said no because I was only dilated to a 1 and I don't want to get one so early on. They kept asking if I was sure. I said yes. Okay. So if I knew the folley balloon was going to feel the way that it did, I would have said yes to any kind of pain medication. I have a high tolerance for pain and I seriously thought I was going to pass out from the pain!

Once it was in, it was still uncomfortable but 12 hours later I was dilated to a 6, 60% effaced and a -2! I was so excited! My baby was measuring small, approx 5.5lbs to be exact, so we figured she'd slide on out in just a few hours. 2 hours later and I'm dilated to a 7! Okay. It's slow. But progress! It is now 9:30am the next day! I was originally admitted and began the cervical softening at 11am the day before.

By 5:30pm, I am still at a 7, 60% and a -2!!! My daughters heart rate drops every contraction but goes right back up, they are not too concerned, but gave us a choice for a c-section. My husband and I instantly know we want to. After 9 hours of laboring and there is absolutely no change, there has to be a reason. It all goes so fast after that! Hubby is in scrubs, anesthesiologist is giving more meds. I'm getting prepped. An hour later I'm in the OR. My husband finally comes in and I can hear the suction, I can feel slight pressure. And when I say slight, I mean like, it feels like someone pressed their thumb on my abdomen. Very minimal!

What felt like, 5 minutes later, I hear, "She's here!" Her color is a little pale. She's breathing!" And then I hear the most beautiful sound, her cry! They ask if I want to see her, I literally said, "Well Duh!" So they pull the curtain down and show her to me for the very first time! I'm so in love!!! She looks just like her daddy!!! Daddy and baby go to the nursery as I get sewed up. About an hour later my husband and my daughter, come into the recovery room! I finally get to hold my sweet tiny girl!

Oh and we found out why I wasn't progressing. Her placenta was literally stuck at the top of that damn fibroid and her umbilical cord was not letting her descend down! My poor baby! She tried so hard!!!

Ava Leilani was born on 11/14/17 at 7:17pm after 22 hours of hard labor and an hour c-section. She weighed in at a whopping 5lbs 14 oz, 18 1/4 inches long! She is our precious little stinky and completes our blended family!
