Buying a car at 18

em

So where I live, you have to do 50 hours of supervised driving before you can get your drivers licence.

I’m currently at 34 hours, hopefully going for my test in early January.

At the moment, my mum, brother and I share one car. He normally catches the bus to uni everyday (he’s now on break until March) and she drives to work most days.

I’ll be looking to buy a car soon, as I’ll be starting my studies in February, and my campus is far, so the only possible way to study and work is if I have my own car. (I’ll be north of the city every day, she’ll be east, and he’s south so we can’t share).

I’m good at saving money, the only struggles will be registration & insurance costs, but they’ll be easy enough to figure out.

Mum is super weird about it though, and whenever I mention it, she always says “I’d like to buy a car too” in a really sarcastic sorta way. I’ve told her how necessary it’ll be, but she still doesn’t seem to be onboard with this idea.

I’ll be 19 in March and lots of people I know own their own cars and work less than I do.

Would you let your 18/19 year old buy their own car?
