Do you agree?

Question

So I’m sure this will get a lot of hate from some, but I honestly think this is the best thing you can teach your kids. Mutual respect is the key for happy relationships, at least in my book. 
I grew up in a southern state and everything was always about respecting your elders. But my elders (not my parents I mean like neighbors) were assholes. I don’t think that anyone should have to take abuse (verbal or otherwise) just because of their age.

I respect everyone until they give me a reason not to. If they've proven themselves unworthy of respect, I won't waste my time

To a certain extent.
Children need to be taught to respect authority and they need to be taught how to raise awareness of a person in authority is not behaving well.
I’m not going to teach my kid to go into second grade and make their teacher prove themselves.  Hell no, because I’m not raisin a brat who thinks he gets final say on who is or is not worthy of respect.
But I will teach my child that there is a small portion of people who abuse power or are not good.  I will teach them how we handle thise people by telling a parent or a trusted adult about the situation and handling it through the proper channels.

I agree because people will use that excuse “respect your elders” to be straight up disrespectful. I’m not going to tolerate being disrespected and neither will my children, so these “elders” better come correct 😒

I always believe in being the bigger person. Even if someone is rude to me I try not to break my cool. As soon as they get personal and/or excessively angry , THEY have lost the battle. 
Now that doesn't mean I can't stand up for what I believe in, but I always do so in a cool, collected manner

'Respect your elders' is used in the same way as 'the customer is always right'. It's basically an excuse for some people to be assholes. Show someone respect to begin with, but if they're not respectful to you then they don't deserve your respect. Someone isn't automatically correct just because they've been alive longer. This also means that if someone from a younger generation than yourself is being disrespectful then you don't owe them respect either. Basically, treat people as you'd expect to be treated

I say be respectful until you are given a reason not to. but if they are really awful, don't be around them. cause being negative just creates more negativity.

Absolutely. 
I always start off with giving people respect, but if they do something to lose it, it’s gone, no matter their age or gender or status.

I respect everyone until they disrespect me. In my southern upbringing, “respect your elders” meant be their servant, recognize yourself as less than them, make yourself small and uncomfortable in order to make them comfortable. I think that’s bullshit. I will NOT teach that to my child.
But everyone deserves politeness and common curtesy.
