Why is marijuana illegal?

Question

I know there are a lot of theories out there, but the one that really got me thinking was - it was made illegal some time in the 30's because the government was afraid it would make all the women fall in love with black men..... Ridiculous right? I can kind of see that being true - things were a lot different then. 
Just for reference, I don't smoke it or anything else, but I don't believe it, or any drugs for that matter, should be illegal.

I think it is so the big pharmaceutical companies can keep their fingers in the honey pot. Marijuana has so many postive health benefits (and I don't mean just smoking it) the plant itself can be turned into oils and other forms and has been proven to help with so many things. Big pharm saw this years ago and realized it would take a ton of money away from them! And the government has their hand in with big pharm.....

To sum it up, it's banned currently because our government fucked up and doesn't want to own up to it, and they *apparently* can't find a good way to make money off it. I don't smoke it either, but I know a lot of people that do. Never had a encounter with a mean pot head.

I do not smoke or care for Marijuana but I think since cigarettes are legal and kill Marijuana should be legal. As for why they are illegal... idiots.

It was banned long before big pharma.

It was banned due to a push of wanting to know the ingredients inside medication. As the turn of the century can about people wanted to know more of what they were putting in there body.

Also In the early 1900-1930 people were pushing government to clean up the streets from the poor and homeless and criminals. One "answer" to this was limiting all addictive and habit forming drugs including alcohol(prohibition)

The concepts from that time period were aimed at protecting the "family" unit and drugs were a direct attack on "upstanding citizens"

Around the 1930s it became a banned substance and a "poison" in most states

Cannabis was first made illegal in Canada in the 1920's, after a vague reference to a "new drug". They jumped on it, and made it illegal. There was a writer who said cannabis was "a menace" and "the only ways out of cannabis addiction were insanity, death or abandonment." And Canada was involved with international conferences that probably agreed on making it illegal, so we went along.

There have been many decriminalization bills, but all have failed. 
I know in Canada, the liberal party wants to legalize it - which I am all for - but they are having troubles because there is no reliable road-side test for THC.  Unlike with alcohol, they can use a breathalyzer.

I know they are testing a saliva test now, that can test for many different drugs, but it's involves adding drug tests to our drunk driving laws including legal limits and such.
