How do you know if your baby is heads down or breach?

With my daughter I knew she was breech because her head was between my ribs and I could barely breathe. With my son I know he is head down because I feel the heaviness (and outline) of his head in-between my pelvis... and like the other Mom said, I can feel his hiccups down there too.

My midwife showed me how to feel with my fingertips low above my public bone on either side, look for hard round shape of the head. Have to lay on your back and best to empty bladder first.

If you’re far enough along your OB can feel your belly and tell. But signals for you are if you’re feeling hiccups in your pelvis then baby is head down. Babies do turn a lot while they still have room so unless you’re 35+ weeks baby can be head down one week and breech the next.

I can kind of tell a difference in the way movement from baby’s hands feels vs foot kicks. Hands are kind of... squirmier? Smaller, flickering feelings, where as feet/kicks a bigger, stronger and more defined movements. So I’ve based my understanding of position on that and been right for both pregnancies, so far.
