Thoughts on the rapture?

I always believed that the rapture would be one mass exodus in which Jesus returned and took us home. My friend, who used to be a nun, believes that the rapture is actually happening now, and it occurs as each persons physical body passes and their soul is ascended to heaven. Thoughts?
