Would you be friends with a murder convict?

So this is going to be long. But my brother had a childhood friend who used to call me his elder sister. He had an very isolated childhood. He was a very angry child and once tried to kill his sister with a knife, so the parents instead of giving him counselling, they gave him a separate apartment. He used to be all alone from 3rd grade. His parents visited occasionally.

So once all the loniness got to him and he became really mentally ill. When his mother visited him alone once, some fight ensued and he killed his mom. He ran away before his dad / police arrived. He was I believe 18/19 when this happened. However he ran away and kept calling my brother so the police took my brother along with him to capture him. It all happened a long time ago (5+ years) and I quite frankly forgot about the whole thing.

Today out of the blue, he has been calling me, facebooking me and whatsapping me. I have not returned any messages or calls. He has done his jail time.

One part of me goes out for this child who had no one since he was in third grade and even now am sure people are shunning him. The other logical side says he has got my family into trouble once so I should aboid at all cost.

What would you do?

He is still a human being.
This is a really different situation.
It sounds like he is a product of his raising.
But honestly everyone needs a friend.

That's a tough question. If you did start talking to him, you could try to convince him to move off and start a new life where no one knows him. I wouldn't be brave enough to do it myself, although I would be feel compelled to help. After all, sounds like he got some seriously shitty parents.

I have a family, and talking to him means he might find us. I've also had a stalker and they're not as funny and lighthearted as movies play them out to be. So to answer your question, no, I wouldn't. I'm not willing to put myself in that situation. He'll move on eventually.

Everyone has a past. I have a horrible past..not one that I tell many people. But the ones who do know my past don't think of me different.

He was basically abandoned by his parents so I get the emotional abuse and trauma that caused him to snap but I don't know that it's necessarily safe for you to be close to him. It seems that he's had problems most of his life and he really should be in some intensive therapy.

I was friends with a person before they tortured and killed another one of my friends, now I have zero time for him and I hope he never looks me up once he gets out of jail, because my response will be less than friendly, twat!

Depending on the person yea. There are all sorts of reasons people murder. I know someone who's husband went to jail for killing some guy who raped his daughter. Still talk to them. I know a guy who had a really bad past. He's now my daughter's grandfather and is really awesome. In this situation yes I would be friends with him. I know what it's like to be isolated because of a mental illness. I could have been like him if I didn't decide to take my anger out on myself (cutting) and took it out on the person.

I personally would depending on the situation in this case I don't see an issue with communicating with him I wouldn't spend one on one time just incase he snapped again but if someone killed in self defense accidentally or for the protection of a loved one I absolutely would be friends with them

What he needs is compassion so he doesn't fall into the same patterns. You aren't selfish if you choose not to be the one to give it to him as he seems to have caused your family some anguish,  but it may mean more than you will ever know to him if you communicate with him.

It may be the altruistic side of me spwaking, but I believe that showing him he isn't alone would do a world of good in rehabilitating him back into society.
