How Much Does a Baby Add to Your Monthly Budget?

This is my very first pregnancy, so I have no idea what to expect. My husband and I will be looking for a new apartment soon, but before I set a budget for rent, I thought I should try to get a rough idea of the recurring monthly cost of having a baby (mind you, I'm not talking big ticket items you buy once--more like the monthly cost of diapers, health/hygiene products, baby food [as baby gets older of course], and other items you need to buy for baby regularly). And I know that the cost of living varies from place to place, and we all might have some different necessities, and etc., but I'd like to get even just a rough idea of what we might expect to budget for. your diaper costs will be higher the first couple of months and then go down. we went through at least a box a month,.sometimes two. otherwise, feeding is inexpensive if you breastfeed and the rest is just things like clothing and lotions...etc. biggest expense you want to account for is insurance!

The only thing we really buy now with any regularity is food. Sixty pack of diapers every other month and wipes as often because we use cloth. Clothes are hand me down, so the only other big expense is swimming lessons. Babe is nine months old and I’m still on maternity leave

If you stock up on the items during your pregnancy and you have a nice stock pile you should at least have 6-8 months of a supply before you have to buy anything else.
With my daughter when I had her I had everything I could need and I bought it all in pieces during my pregnancy. When she was born the only thing I had to constantly buy her was pacifiers because we kept losing them. Lol
But she didn’t need big items until maybe like month 8 or 9 because I was trying to make sure I had at least 8-9 months worth of stuff.

I would honestly round up. I don't know what brands you want to buy, or how much things cost in your area, but for me as far as Diapers, Wipes, Bath stuff & baby food. It depends on if you choose formula or not as well. I would say roughly 35-40 a month for diapers & wipes. & food, can vary.

Make sure to budget for medical expenses and check ups. The cost will depend on your insurance. And don’t forget childcare, if applicable. As far as other stuff it depends on your choices, will you use cloth diapers, store brand diapers or name brand diapers? Will you breastfeed or formula feed? Will you buy brand new full price clothes or shop sales or buy slightly used? I’d certainly make sure to budget enough, but there are ways to cut costs by making cheaper choices.
