Toddler Bed Suggestions?

Question

My daughter’s pediatrician suggested we start her in a toddler bed before our second child arrives. That would put her around 18 months, which I feel is early. However she does sleep through the night and puts herself to sleep so maybe she will be ready? 
Do any of you have suggestions for starting her in a toddler bed? Did you put your baby in one before two years? How did it go?

Don’t do it!
As long as your daughter is not climbing out of the crib and putting herself in danger I would just leave her in there. She puts herself to sleep until she figures out that she can scoot out of bed and run around the house at night. I’m leaving my daughter in her crib as long as possible!

We transitioned my son to a toddler bed around 18 months to open the crib up for the baby on the way. I didn't think he would do good and would never sleep but he does really good. even if he wakes up he stays in it. sometimes he gets up and grabs a toy but gets right back in bed. I do have to keep it dark in his room and close the door. which if you aren't comfortable with the door closed you could always try a baby gate. We kept the crib up a few days in case we need it but he didn't need it.

Only make changes if you feel you really need to. From what I understand it is best to make any necessary changes a long while before the baby arrives so that they don’t associate the change with the new baby. My 19mo will be in my bed/sidecar and newborn will be in a bassinet on the other side of our bed.

we took the rails down at about 16 months ans he was absolutely fine. he never tries to run around the house... hardest bit was him falling out of bed but we solved that with some friendly advice of a pool noodle! x

We put our daughter in one at 18 months. She is now 22 months. It was the disney plastic ones and we like it because its low and has rails on each side. She did great! We were so worried becuase she was crazy in her crib and it took her a while to calm down at night so we thought we were in for it. Turns out she was so excited to try it that we only went in maybe 3 times to reposition her. We gave her a travel pilloe and she loved that too. We left the crib in her room though because we are expecting her little brother in April so it helped us knowing that the crib was still there if we had a bad night with the toddler bed. Since then we only had to put her in the crib once becuase she wasn't listening. We were shocked! Defiantly give it a try!

I wouldn’t do it until she starts trying to climb out - my daughter didn’t move to a big bed until she was over 2.5yrs and she is the best sleeper! You’re going to be back to sleepless nights with the new baby and sometimes the bigger child struggles with the change, so I would minimize the chances of you getting NO sleep between trying to negotiate your 18 month old to sleep and helping your baby fall asleep. Plus then we didn’t need to get a toddler bed then a bigger bed - we just ended up getting her a double bed and that way we can snuggle in with her to read stories :)

My daughter got a toddler bed for her 2nd Christmas. She's now 3 1/2 and still refuses to sleep in it though the night. Every child is different but if you feel comfortable enough to put your child in it I'd say the earlier the better.
