HELP, let toddler cry it out???

please. he's a year old, EXTREMELY tired. as soon as I lay him down he wakes up and screams. I've never let him cry it out. it's been about 10 minutes now and he's still going. what should I do? please and thank you.

I got to the point I had to let my DD cry it out so that both of us could get some decent sleep. I was worried about it and spoke to her doctor. The doctor said it’s perfectly fine to let them cry it out for 10 minute periods. Let them cry for 10 minutes, then go check they’re okay, then it’s fine to let them cry for another 10 minutes, then check on them again, etc. It was hard but it definitely worked for us. I’d start timing as soon as she started crying, if she stopped crying for a little bit, I’d stop timing, only starting again when/if she started crying.

We did a modified version. Started with 5 min and went up by 5s. Rarely had to go longer than 15.

Everyone is different, but letting my son cry it out saved the both of us. First night was the worst, second was a little better and so on... by the 5th night he didn’t cry AT ALL and now sleeps through the night at almost 2 years old.

We made a point of explaining we were going, then went downstairs (much easier to stay away a decent amount of time if you’ve walked to another room), let him cry for 5 mins, then cuddled, put down and stay away for 6 mins etc. But every time we’d firmly say, “sleepy time. Love you.”. It became an audio cue for him. Good luck and don’t feel bad. X

It really does work. I know it’s hard... but I think once they’re an older baby and especially 1+ they catch. On. SO. Quick!!!! It’s almost like you just have to get through the initial start and then it’s cake! They are so much smarter and know so much more than we realize and once he realizes you mean what you say and this is time to sleep he will! It feels like an impossible wall you just can’t get to the other side, trust me I’ve had two TERRIBLE sleepers and when I stick to a plan they always shocked me! And I mean BAD sleepers! .....come up with a nap and bedtime routine even a two min one that lets him know what’s coming..give him a lovey and associate it with sleep time and teach him what his bed is during the day say “his name’s bed now!” And yes he will scream initially mostly because he’s mad, not heartbroken, nothing horrible, just really pissed! Lol... get through the first night which is the worst and then I bet you every night to follow will shock you! And you’ll be on the other side of it! Also think about this, it will only get harder, more of a habit that will just be so much harder to break a 2 or 3 or 4 year old will only fight that much harder and at some point either you have to do it, or it will continue, so might as well be now, the sooner he knows how to sleep/knows his bed the better! GL!
