Age Appropriate wake times?

Question

I think my 8 month old is ready for just 2 naps a day instead of 3... I just don't want him awake too long in between naps and bedtime. I have moved his bedtime up to 7-730 due to the third cat nap being cut out. What is "too long" for an 8 MO to be awake?

My daughter has been on the same schedule since she was 4 months old. She’s now 7.5 months. She takes 1.5 to 2 hour naps (twice a day) and has 2.5 to 3 hour awake times. So she wakes at 7am, naps at 10am and 3pm and then goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps through until 7am again.

Our daughter desperately still needs that third nap at 4:30/5pm but often refuses it and then it’s a struggle until 8pm bedtime. If we put her to bed before 8, she is up so early!

My girl will be 8 months in 2 days. We recently dropped her third nap and upped her bedtime to 730-745. I didn’t realize, but we have been following the 2-3-4 routine for sleep. Once she wakes in the morning, she’s up for about 2 hours. When she wakes from that nap (usually 1.5 hours) then she is up for about 3 hours. Then down for her second nap. Then she’s up for about 4 hours until bedtime. Obviously some days are different and times vary!

My LO will be 8 months old on the 22nd and he seems like he can’t go more than 2/2.5 hours without a nap. So he usually takes 3 naps a day still. I think it depends on your baby. If he’s not acting tired than he might be fine to stay up longer and only do 2 naps a day if they are long enough naps. However is he’s still showing signs of being tired I wouldn’t cut the 3rd nap out just yet. You definitely don’t want yourself an overly tired baby. It’ll also depend on the time your LO wakes up in the morning. My LO only sleeps until 530 and so by 730/8 he is ready for a nap. And usually he’ll nap for 1-2 hours. And by noon he usually is ready for another which is usually another 1-2 hours and then by 430 he’s ready for his last nap and will sleep about an hour. And by 7 he gets ready for bed and is usually in bed by 730. Just follow your LOs cues.

My LO is 8.5 months and hasn’t had three naps a day in months, with the odd exception of dozing off in the car for 15 minutes. She has two solid naps a day, one at 9 and another at 2, and is up four hours just fine before bedtime. I think that last nap has always been so impossible because my oldest gets home from school and she’s not exactly quiet😜

Every baby is different, but with both my kids at this age they can’t go more than two hours awake without needing a nap. My 8 month old wakes up for the day by 730-8 and then is down for a nap by 9-930 and sleeps till 1130. Then another nap by 1 and I usually have to wake her to get her sister from school at 230. And then she naps again from 4-6 and in bed by 8 and then sleeps through. I would go by your babies cues and even if a third nap is just a short cat nap so you’re not having an over tired baby by the end of the day it’s not a big deal. If you can transition to two naps then go for it! My experience with both babies has been three naps till almost a year old, but I have very sleepy children apparently lol my first didn’t drop napping till almost 4 years old.

My 8 mo gets up at about 6:30 and is ready for a nap in 2 hours. I she takes a 1.5-2 hour nap then she’s good for another 2-3 hours. Her longest stretch is in the evening. She can sometimes be awake for over 4 hours. We’ve tried an evening nap but she fights it so hard and is usually more crabby when she wakes up. We start her bedtime routine early though, like 6:15 and she’s almost always asleep by 6:45
