Surgery during pregnancy...

Kaitlin

Just got back from my 20 week Ultrasound. Baby boy #3 is doing great, strong heartbeat, brain looks good, measuring a little bigger then my due date. Unfortunately I have a large cyst of my right ovary that was first discovered at my first ultrasound at 12 weeks. Cyst was 5.6cm, 3 weeks later at 15 weeks it grew to 7cm and today at 20 weeks it’s 7.78cm. It isn’t just round anymore, it’s oblong shaped and now growing it’s own little compartments or something. The blood test 5 weeks ago showed it wasn’t cancerous but it’s not 100%. Today my doctor told me we need to do surgery ASAP! He said if we wait any longer it would be a much more difficult surgery with baby being bigger and the cyst growing like it is. And if we tried waiting until after delivery for surgery, It would likely erupt before then, leaving me and baby at rist, possibly bleeding out, having to be medivact out of town (i live in a very small town with no hospital).

He wants to remove the entire cyst and has to take the ovary with it to hopefully not have it erupt in the process. He’s going to try doing it through laparoscopic surgery but if he can’t get all of it without it erupting he will have to do it like a c-section. If it erupts and it is cancerous it could spread cancerous cells all throughout my abdomen! (Terrifying)

He said he’s confident in doing the surgery but as far as baby goes there is risk of loosing my baby. When I asked if maybe I should go to a bigger hospital in a different city that has a NICU he said he really didn’t see the need. If we loose the baby he doesn’t recommend resuscitation due to baby only being 21 weeks. And if we were at a NICU there isn’t much they could do for him either. That comment really upset me but at the same time do I want to potentially put my baby through all that suffering and pain and being in the hospital and to not know what the outcome could even be. My niece was born at 32 weeks and was in the NICU for 2 months far from home. When she finally got to come home she was still hooked up to tubes and wires that would beep if her heart stopped. She’s now 5 and perfectly healthy and would never know she was 4 lb when she was born. But 4lb is a lot bigger then 13oz like my baby is said to currently be!

I had a lot of cry’s and a lot of thinking, a lot of google searches. I guess now I’m looking for hope. Looking for good outcomes, positive stories, every pregnancy is different and every situation is different but I’d like to hear outcomes. Has anyone gone through this type of surgery during pregnancy before? Did your baby make it? How was recovery? Did the rest of your pregnancy go smoothly? Without one ovary how easy was it to get pregnant again? Please any information is great!
